About Sassy Divaz
The Sassy Divaz believes it is never too early to prepare for your future as a member of a university dance team. Participation in a collegiate dance or band auxiliary is hard work. We train dancers to prepare for university auxiliary auditions and scholarship opportunities. We provide "college roadmaps" to dancers to prepare them for college admission, required test taking, dance auditions processes, and tricks to receiving scholarships. The most qualified dancers are those who put in the hard work. We condition and train so that the auditions process is easy and gives our members a cutting edge on the competition. The Sassy Divaz is not your average squad; we are one of the most versatile in the world of auxiliary community majorette dance teams. The Sassy Divaz are trained in traditional majorette, baton twirling, and color guard (flag). The Sassy Divaz always take pride in their appearance and offers extensive travel opportunities. These "Sweethearts of the Midwest" receive development opportunities in performance, ballet, jazz, and acrobatics.
History
The Sassy Divaz has been in existence since November 1, 2014 in Kansas City, Missouri. The team was founded by Coryelle Abney, Kamesha Jarvis, and Erin Hutton; all former dancers and friends. The founders had a mission to train young dancers for band dance admission and scholarship opportunities; which style was not popular in the Midwest at the time. The team was named Sassy because of the cute dance moves and Divaz because of the stylish costumes.
In a city that was saturated with step teams, drill teams, and traditional dance studios, the Sassy Divaz got an overwhelming response and the team became the first independent community majorette team in Kansas City. The Kansas City Chapter was directed and coached by Coryelle Abney, Kamesha Jarvis, and Erin Hutton. The Sassy Divaz took pride in keeping their majorette style traditional and always being classy. Their signature white marching boots and leopard print uniforms were a crowd pleaser.

Amost a year later, the team grew and incorporated a Saint Louis Chapter on July 11, 2015 under the leadership of founder Coryelle Abney. At the time multiple Chapters for community majorette dance teams were unheard of; Both Chapters performed and competed together to become the Sassy Divaz of Missouri.

In 2018, the directors incorporated batons and flags into the dance program to create versatility. The teams versatile nature has earned them the genre of a full auxiliary danceline. In 2020, the Sassy Divaz (Coryelle Scott, Kamesha Barnes) merged with Power House Divas (Tesha Alexander) to become The Diva University. Since founding in 2014, the Sassy Divaz have won many awards, trained with many dance legends, and improved their competitiveness. The members continue to stay sassy and classy at all times, earning the title of the "Sweethearts of the Midwest" and continue to evolve, helping future collegiate dance scholars.

Why Sassy Divaz?
Attending a Historically Black College and University (HBCU) is a defining cultural journey that all races should experience; especially African Americans. The exciting elements of an HBCU includes the Greek life, cheer, distinctive groups, campus organizations, and especially the marching band/dance team and auxiliaries. HBCU band dance has its own culture. Being a HBCU dancer requires a great deal of devotion and hard work; more work than many individuals would think. Dancers have to learn to balance late practices, school work, and sometime jobs during performance Seasons.

This is where Sassy Divaz comes into play. To prevent incoming college freshman from going into culture shock, being overwhelmed balancing school, having audition anxiety, or struggling with skillset, Sassy Divaz prepares your child, prior to attending college, for the colligate-dance lifestyle.
